Enforcement

The Housing and Community Investment Department (HCIDLA) and the Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) are responsible for the enforcement of local land use regulations in the City of Los Angeles.

Generally, HCIDLA investigates code violations related to rental properties containing more than one dwelling unit, such as duplexes, apartment buildings, or properties with more than one single-family dwelling. LADBS is responsible for properties containing only one dwelling unit and commercial, industrial, and vacant buildings.

For more information about reporting and resolving code violations, visit the HCIDLA and LADBS websites. HCIDLA’s toll-free hotline is (866) 557-RENT (7368). LADBS is available at 311 or (213) 473-3231.
